The zine I created that this site is named after is somewhat was much more political then this web page has thus far been. This web page focus has been primarily on getting information about various disabilities to people who need it, but there is so much more to having and being disabled that the rest of this page only hints at.
I myself often want to look away and never look back, but life, if you are living it and being honest with yourself is not always comfortable. If a person never finds themselves in a situation where they are dealing with at least one thing which they find uncomfortable and want to run away from or avoid, then they haven't even been honest enough with themselves to explore the possibilities and allow discomfort. Disabilities tend to evoke discomfort in a lot of us because they remind us of our own vulnerabilities, weaknesses, and mortality. If one is prejudiced against people because of the color of their skin, heritage, or religious beliefs chances are that person will not have to worry about becoming a part of that group. Discriminating against the disabled is even more complicated because anyone who is lucky enough to live long enough will become a member of a class of people who historically have been ignored. No wonder people get afraid.
